Six Flags Magic Mountain recently announced at a press conference that this year they are going to spend more on Fright Fest than any other year prior. Those who attended had the opportunity to see some of the results of the increase in spending as there were two enormous props as well as improved costumes and make-up. We’re interested in seeing what they do now with their advertising budget to target customers who may otherwise only go to the big three (Scary Farm, Horror Nights and Dark Harbor).
There will be seven scare zones including the new Ravenstitch and Voodoo Nights. Also, there will be eight mazes. Those will be Willoughby’s Resurrected, Chupacabra, Aftermath, Total Darkness and the new mazes Toyz of Terror 3-D, The Willoughby’s Garden of Darkness Vault 666 and Red’s Revenge. Members of the press got a sneak preview of Vault 666 which looks like it’s going to be a huge maze that has a lot of elaborate sets. Returning this year will be the Fright Feast (a buffet dinner) with an illusionist on stage and the new new VIP experience Monster Tour.
With the classic thrill rides and upgrades in mazes, monsters, props, etc. Fright Fest looks like it will be a winner this year.
The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor Tests Thresholds of Fear with an Exclusive Encounter Onboard the Haunted Ship
LONG BEACH, Calif., (August 21, 2014) –The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor will rise from the haunted bows of a rich, torrid history to scare all those who dare this Halloween season beginning October 2 through November 2. Dark Harbor is pleased to unveil two brand new mazes, Soulmate and B340, and an Exclusive Encounter unlike any other haunted experience onboard the infamous cruise liner.
Graceful Gale was the belle of The Queen Mary in the 1930s. As a beautiful first class passenger Gale charmed her way across the ship’s dance floor regularly until mysteriously disappearing on her final passage in 1939. The new Soulmate maze will take over the former location of the Containment maze and bring to life the haunted spirit of the frightful Graceful Gale. The story of Gale will unravel as her true spirit is revealed and those who dare will realize that Gale may not be as graceful as she appeared, but in fact is more monstrous than ever imagined. Gale will haunt The Queen Mary in order to lure suitors into her possession. Once she captures their hearts she will have her adoring minions cut them up and reassemble them to create her “perfect mate.” But Gale isn’t so easy to please and only a few creatures are suitable enough to be her dance partner. The rest of the rejects are doomed and outcast to haunt the Queen at night.

Universal City, CA, August 14, 2014 – Celebrated Grammy® Award-winning musician, SLASH, hailed as one of the 10 best electric guitar players of all time by Time magazine, is joining forces with Universal Studios Hollywood to compose an original score for the theme park’s hypnotizing new 3D maze, “Clowns 3D Music by SLASH” at“Halloween Horror Nights,” beginning Friday, September 19, 2014.
While partnering with top recording artists has become a signature of “Halloween Horror Nights,” this collaboration with prolific guitarist, SLASH, marks the first time a musician has created an original maze score for the popular event. This inspired effort comes at a demanding time for SLASH, whose new album “World on Fire” debuts on September 16, 2014, on the heels of his “Let Rock Rule” World Tour performing with Aerosmith.
Infused with the rocker’s hell-raising electric guitar riffs, the ominous new “Clowns 3D Music by SLASH” haunted attraction is no laughing matter as it unmasks the psychological disorder known as Coulrophobia, a disturbing condition affecting those with an extreme and irrational fear of clowns.
ScareLA just wrapped up it’s Second year in operation as The Reef (the new name for LA Mart) hosted the wildly popular event. ScareLA is produced by Lora Ivanova as well as David Markland (owner of Creepy LA website). Our estimates on attendance for the two-day celebration of all things Horror and Halloween is over 6,000 ravenous fans.
This year was bigger and better than last year as there were so many vendors, workshops, presentations and panels that it wasn’t possible to see everything, even for those who went both days. Saturday night there was also a party on the 11th floor created by Sinister Pointe.
The panels we saw were “Chilling Tales of the Haunted Mansion: LIVE!” presented by Captured Aural Phantasy Theater (A vaudeville type live radio show that payed an homage to the Mansions 45 year anniversary). Exploring the Ruins of Los Angeles (a live panel by Atlas Obscura that dealt with lesser known and some abandoned locations around Los Angeles) .
Urban Death (a terrifying theater experience presented by Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group) was creepy, artistic and risky.
UNIVERSAL CITY, CA (August 11, 2014) – Universal Pictures’ Academy Award®-winning and genre-defining film, An American Werewolf in London, written and directed by John Landis, will be unleashed upon guests at Universal Studios Hollywood in an all-new “Halloween Horror Nights” maze beginning Friday, September 19, 2014. The experience will recreate legendary scenes from the cult favorite using gruesomely convincing props, chillingly authentic music and mind-blowing special effects that will re-awaken the terrorizing shape shifting creature with superhuman strength: the Werewolf.
Guests will begin their horrifying journey as they enter “The Slaughtered Lamb,” the English countryside pub movie fans will instantly recognize, and experience first-hand what the tavern patrons in the film meant when they cautioned, “Stay on the road, keep clear of the Moors and beware the moon.” After stumbling upon the overgrown wasteland known as the “Moors,” maze-goers will be forced to traverse through dense fog amidst sounds of savage growls and unknown peril ahead.
“We are extremely excited to bring ‘An American Werewolf in London’ to Universal Studios Hollywood’s ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ for the first time,” said John Murdy, Universal Studios Hollywood Creative Director and Executive Producer of “Halloween Horror Nights.” “John Landis’ iconic horror film and the groundbreaking makeup effects by Academy Award-winner Rick Baker have influenced generations of horror filmmakers and fans, and remains a classic of the genre. Turning such a celebrated film, which has been characterized as one of the greatest films of all time, into a ‘living horror movie’ can be daunting. As the movie studio that invented the horror film genre, we have the expertise to deliver a realistically compelling experience and are up to the challenge.”

There are only four more days left until The Great Horror Campout hits San Diego this Friday. The event was recently a huge success in Los Angeles as well as Portland and now those living further south will have their opportunity to experience this one-in-a-kind event. Being in the midst of Summer there’s no greater relaxation than going camping. But this isn’t your typical camping trip.
The folks at GHC have created a “choose your own adventure” event, where anything goes as well as a less extreme version for those who might not want all the scares. Either way, the campout is a 12-hour overnight, interactive event which promises to offer something to everyone, regardless of what your fear level may be.
The most popular part of the Campout is the Hell Hunt where guests will experience their worst nightmares while participating in the scavenger hunt in hopes to be the next Hellmaster. Hell Zones are the main areas of the Hunt where most SCAG (Shit Campers All Get) resides. Speed Bumps are obstacles that may leave you kidnapped, caged or trunked. There is also a Blood Tag Match Tournament as well as a Camp Talent Show. Do you have what it takes to survive the night and be crowned Hellmaster?
Golden State Haunts and Events will be participating in the San Diego Great Horror Campout. We want to see all you horror freaks out there as well.
