X-Rated Thrills and Murderous Chills at Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare

Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare has a little bit of something for everyone.  Along with three haunted houses they also have a a vendor zone selling everything from haunt memorabilia to food and beer along with monsters roaming the FEARplex, sideshow acts, a movie playing on the big screen and live concerts that are included with admission.  But, the main attraction of course is the three haunts known as: The Lords of Salem: In Total Blackout, Rob Zombie’s The Haunted World of El Superbeasto in 3D and Rob Zombie’s Haunt of 1,000 Corpses all which range from a surreal and adult theme to pure, grisly terror.  All three haunts are separate but come right after the other in order.

The Lords of Salem: In Total Blackout begins with Sherri Moon Zombie’s character from the film shaking and twitching on a raised platform situated under a facade that simply says, “The Lords of Salem”.  After seeing a ghostly scene from the film, guests are brought into a room where they are hoodwinked and given brief instructions.  This maze seemed to go on forever and in fact, one guest that was behind us said, “When is this maze going to end”?  As you can’t see anything in the maze it’s definitely not a visual experience but the whole point is to find your way out of the corridors while loud bangs and pops go off around you.  There are also a few times when you’ll actually run into the monsters and there’s a surprise inside that will really shock you, although we had heard someone discussing this maze before we went in so we were prepared.

Rob Zombie’s The Haunted World of El Superbeasto in 3D is a 3D experience that is more adult related and funny that it is scary.  Upon entering, a giant vagina (no, we’re not kidding) a lady at the entrance (who looks like a cross between an Oompa-Loompa and a character from Crazy Town) says such tongue-in-cheek phrases such as, “Come inside my pussy”.  The maze plays off the 3D very well with bright, pastel colors and odd characters that pretty much just stand there either dancing or making fun of you, while their masks and costumes seem to jump out at you.  In the maze are such things as doors with funny names such as “Ben Dover” and “Mike Hunt”, a Nazi war room with Hitler’s head in a clear case and a cigar smoking guerrilla.  On the walls are painted such things as cartoon penises and smiling sperm.  This a great maze with a unique theme and has more of a party atmosphere than anything terrifying.  It’s a cross between performing in a Crowley sex magick ritual and being on an LSD trip with Timothy Leary.

The highlight of the night is Rob Zombie’s Haunt of 1,000 Corpses which actually takes you through Captain Spaulding’s Museum of Monsters and Madmen.  Since the film came out we’ve always wanted to go through it and now we had the opportunity.  This maze takes you from inside the gas station deep into the museum which features serial killers ranging from Lizzie Borden and Ed Gein to Richard Ramirez and Pogo the Clown (John Wayne Gacy) until you meet up with Dr. Satan himself.  The scenes are grisly and very detailed, portraying perfectly the real-life events such as the Sharon Tate murders and the movie scenes such as Dr. Satan’s unique surgical experiments.

If you’re as twisted as we are we recommend you check out this event and visit: http://greatamericannightmare.com/index3.html#
