If you’re looking for a fun movie to curl up with this Halloween, let us suggest Wrong Turn 5. This definitely isn’t an intellectual thriller or even a suspenseful horror film, but it does have enough tits, ass and gore for even the most hardcore horror fan. Written and directed by Declan O’Brien (Wrong Turn 3 and 4), WT 5 serves as a sequel to Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings and takes place before the first film.
This time a small mining town in West Virginia hosts the legendary Mountain Man Festival on Halloween (similar to Burning Man). A group of friends heading out for the event crash into a tree, leaving their car immobilized after swerving to avoid a guy they see in the middle of the road. It turns out that this guy is Maynard, played by Doug Bradley (Pinhead), who is the newest member of the Hilliker brothers clan. Bradley gives a subtle, yet creepy performance as a father-figure to the brothers.
After stabbing one of the young friends, Maynard is arrested by the town sheriff. The friends are also arrested (which a huge bag of drugs) and all are taken to the town jail. This starts a chain of events where the brothers attempt to break Maynard out of jail. While the revelers at celebrating the Mountain Man Festival and the friends are stuck in a hotel, the Hilliker clan proceeds with their plan.
All the communication lines are cut as well as the town’s electricity and that’s when the killings start. Sheriff Angela (Camilla Arfwedson) finds out that Maynard is a fugitive wanted for murder. She’s going to make sure he stays in jail until the US Marshals come to pick him up in the morning. Maynard promises Angela that if she releases him from jail that the killings will stop. Angela will have none of it though and makes sure that Maynard serves his justice. With no lines of communication, the sheriff is the only law enforcement around.
The friends are being killed one-by-one until only Lita, played by Roxanne McKee (Game of Thrones) is left. Maynard tells Lita that if she gets Angela to release him he’ll make sure the cannibals don’t kill her. When Angela is checking on a scream she hears from the town drunk Mose (just released from jail) Lita is faced with a tough decision. Will she release him or will the inbred hillbillies kill her and Angela too?
The movie progresses at a fun pace as we see the Hilliker brothers execute their plan to break their father-figure out of jail. There are many creative and gory kills including disembowelments, decapitation, an electrocution, human souffle and more. There’s one scene that makes the whole movie worthwhile featuring a snow plow and a soccer field, but we won’t give anything away. The special FX and lighting in this movie are great with a lot of explosions and car crashes too. This isn’t the type of horror film you’d probably have an intellectual conversation about or that will give you nightmares weeks later, but if you like inbred-hillbilly cannibal movies such as 1,000 Maniacs or you’re already a fan of the Wrong Turn franchise, we’re sure you’ll like Wrong Turn 5 too.
Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines is being released by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment on Blu-Ray and DVD on October 23rd, just in time for Halloween.
